The Memorial Stone (Potpourri)
Soon after her husband dies, a woman learns that she has only $50,000 to her name. After the funeral, she tells a close friend she has no money left at all.
"How can that be?!" asks her friend. "You had $50,000 just a few days ago."
The widow explains that the funeral home took $10,000. An obligatory donation to the church took another $10,000. "The rest," she said, "went for the memorial stone."
The friend gasped. "$30,000 for the memorial stone? My goodness, how big was it?"
Extending her left hand, the widow said, "Three carats."
